The second annual Race to Burhill, a national tournament series for members of the Disabled Golfers Association (DGA), has reached its climax at Burhill Golf Club, Surrey, with spinal arthritis sufferer Kevin White securing victory in the grand final.
Burhill, is both part of, and headquarters for, BGL Golf, the UK’s leading golf course owner and operator, which, in partnership with the DGA, launched the Race to Burhill in 2013.
The 2014 edition of the tournament kicked off in March at Dartford venue, Birchwood Park Golf Centre – the first of six regional qualifying stages held at different BGL Golf venues located across the UK.
Fifteen finalists teed up for the grand final, an 18-hole Stableford competition, staged on Burhill’s New Course, a regular venue for the PGA EuroPro Tour.
Kevin, who qualified in the fifth regional qualifier at Hoebridge Golf Centre, Surrey, claimed the 2014 Race to Burhill crown with 35 points, topping the leaderboard ahead of two golfers who earned their places in the final at Thornbury Golf Centre, near Bristol.
Ben Bowen, an above-the-knee amputee from Cornwall, secured second place, scoring 34, just one point ahead of Berkshire-based junior with autism, Bobby David, who secured third place on countback.
Sue Robertson, DGA Director, said: “The Race to Burhill has gone from strength-to-strength, and once again, the support of BGL Golf, with both its excellent facilities and helpful, knowledgeable staff, has been pivotal to the tournament’s ongoing success.
“Work on the 2015 event is already under way and we’re all looking forward to returning, with even more participants, to all the qualifying venues as well as the prestigious grand final venue, Burhill.”
Prizes were awarded by David Woodward, Burhill Golf Club’s General Manager, who said: “We host a variety of events throughout the year, including several golf days for disabled golfers, such as the Race to Burhill Final and the Pietsche Trophy, a Ryder Cup style tournament for injured servicemen from the US and UK.
“Golf is a game for all and our facilities, plus those of each BGL Golf venue, are for people of all ages and golfing ability to use and enjoy.
“Congratulations to Kevin and I look forward to seeing his attempt to defend the title next year.”
DGA is a pan-disability, not-for-profit organisation and membership is free. For more information, visit www.disabledgolf.org.uk
